Time Tells – Wrong Way Back
Time Tells is the debut EP from Swedish punkrockers Wrong Way Back, a band that is pretty new to me, and I guess everyone else as well.
Kicking of things is the song that’s also the first single released by the band, Why Be so Hateful. A pretty rock-influenced punk-tune that sets the stage for what is to come on the EP, both musically and lyrically. It’s rock-infused punk that is mixing up the tempo between the slightly more laid back rock-tempo to more fast punkrock. It sounds a bit like Tsunami Bomb on The Definitive Act (if anyone remembers them and that record), mixed up with The Donnas and some old-school rock and emo/hardcore. It feels like a real melting-pot of influences.
Lyrically the songs are well written tunes about assholes caring too much about other people, growing up (or rather not wanting to) and lust. It’s delivered with confidence, packaged in pretty short and intense bursts. As a person who likes melodies, this strikes a pretty nice balance between attitude, speed and melody, mixing up the tempo a bit within tracks. It’s an EP that doesn’t overstay it’s welcome, with the five songs clocking in at slightly below ten minutes. Wild Kids and Stockholm Syndrome are the songs that stays with me the most, but the EP is pretty solid throughout.
Time Tells with Wrong Way Back is an EP that has grown on me a bit since I first heard it. From being a bit hesitant to nodding along with the songs. There’s no skipping here, because there’s barely any time to do the skipping. It’s a nice and quick ride, the sound throwing me back some twenty years at places.
