Corporate Punks – Mistakes Were Made

Corporate Punks - Mistakes Were Made

Mistakes Were Made is a skatepunk-band from Sweden, and Corporate Punks is their fourth EP to date.

The first thing that strikes me when putting on the first track is how reminiscent this is of American skate/pop-punk from the 00’s. Think a bit of mid-career Blink, MxPx, Banner Pilot and Fenix TX just to mention a few. Does this mean that it lacks a bit of uniqueness or its own DNA? Perhaps a little bit, but that matters little when it’s well crafted.

I had a nice time with this little EP. It’s got a good mix of poppy and fast music together with more serious and personal lyrical themes. We’re not going all the way into Emo-land, but it’s mature and well written. While W.U.F, the last track, might become a bit repetitive and overstay it’s welcome, the first two tracks are an enjoyable ride.

I was in the car with my 3-year old the other day, and she was falling asleep in the back, at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, which all parents know is soooo bad. To try to keep her awake I put on this EP and cranked it to eleven. She kept sleeping like a log. I don’t know what this signifies, perhaps that it has some nice production value and is easy on the ears, because it is.

I also got to say that the title of the EP and the artworks speaks to me in a personal way, as I work at a bank in Sweden, hiding my band t-shirts and tattoos underneath flanell shirts (which is about how alternative I can go clothing-wise, thankfully I don’t have to wear a suit). Corporate punks do exist out there in the wild.

Corporate Punks by Mistakes Were Made is a pretty charming little EP. It might not do anything really unique, pretty much sounding like their American influences, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s well played, well written and a good time almost all the throughout.
